FROZEN!!!!!

It's been below -30*C every morning for the past week. Our only source of heat is our wood stove and we are toasty warm. But we have a problem.

This morning when Mary got up she had to go out and get firewood. Yes, I know, I should be doing that but until I get my walking cast I'm restricted to my "red" chair for mobility. Not suitable for outside chores.

So, on went the layers of winter clothes and Mary was set to venture out, but ............................. the door wouldn't open. Not even a hint of cooperating, frozen shut, no movement.

Looking closer one can see the problem.

Frozen hinges. I've never seen that before. Hinges frozen solid on the inside of the house and our house was a comfortable 68*F Go figure.

Once I have an answer I'll update this posting but right now we are in discussions with our architects and the door manufacturer.

In the meantime stay warm and healthy.

Chat later                            -28*C at 6 a.m.

  1. Well you folks are sure getting all the experiences one would ever want or NOT want. It sure has been cold. I have been trying to think of all the good things you can do in this situation...... Splitting kindling is a breeze if your wood is -30*. Also if you are needing to defrost your freezer it is easy...just set the food outside (free from animals of course ) and you can take your time doing the defrosting. It also makes for secure ice on the lakes and those skiing trails will be so slick !!! Of course we are enjoying cooking entire meals on our wood cookstove....but it doesn't have to be this cold for that enjoyment. Help me think of other advantages of extreme cold.

  2. Hi Pat;

    Good to hear from you. I find the days that are very cold are also perfect for photography. The ski is blue, the ice is firm and the snow is crisp, but most of all the lighting is just right.
    Of course days of extreme cold are perfect days for some indoor activities one has been neglecting: file papers, sort and label pictures on your computer, etc.
    Why not warm up the car and go visit a friend. Everyone loves a visit and these cold days usually mean the roads are clear and the weather safe for driving.
    Just some thoughts as we enjoy our first winter in Bancroft.
