DEVASTATED

We thought we had made everything secure but we were wrong. Sometime in the night a predator got in and killed every chick just for the sake of killing. We were devastated.

He pulled back the mesh along the bottom, got in and went to work. Our poor chicks had nowhere to hide. Predators will find the spots that aren't secure and pry open the hole. If you are thinking of raising chickens you can't use too many nails to secure the mesh. Raccoons will pull and twist anything that isn't attached securely.

Even the mesh on our second coop has been pulled back anywhere it wasn't firmly attached. It's a constant battle.

I think I'll be running more barbed wire around the coop and double checking the perimeter.

There will be no meat birds this year, just too upsetting. We will have to rethink and evaluate our plan sometime over the winter.

I'm glad Mary has a week with Owen to get her mind off of this.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear about your girls. When we had chickens I dug down in the dirt about 10" and then made an L shape with the chicken wire and then set big cement blocks on that. I also had a place inside that we locked the door every night, and of course the top was also enclosed. Better luck next time.

  2. Thanks for the tips Joe and Nancy. I think we will have to make some modifications if we plan to have meat birds next year.
