On our way to the Grand Canyon we stopped at the Waputki Indian ruins. How anyone survived in this harsh environment is beyond me. They made use of the few plants growing to sustain life and provide shelter. Their homes were built from local materials and stayed cool in this hot climate because of the design and materials used. Here are a few pictures from our tour of the site.
The Wupatki village as it looks today. The visitors' centre is very informative and gives you an insight as to the treatment these people received from the government as late as 2004. The descendants had been allowed to graze sheep on these lands for years but in 2004 were denied access to pasture land.
Their homes were built like our apartments with many families living in this one complex.
Mary and Carol walk the path around the village.
This is their ceremonial circle used for special gatherings throughout the year.
Mary was our tour guide, explaining each segment of the Indian dwelling.
Still having fun out here in Arizona. It's a great state to visit so be sure to put it on your visitation list.
Got the truck back this afternoon, great service here in Cottonwood.
