Here you can see the transition from clear to covered forest right on the same path. The Spanish moss hangs thickly. It does not harm the plant it lives on, but gets its' nutrition, water and sunlight from the air.
I imagined living in the 18 hundreds, when the moss was gathered and used in pillows and beds. Itch, itch. Not the moss, but rather the bugs that it hosts!
The trail led to Skidaway River. There are 3 alligator ponds along here; fortunately, I didn't see any of the creatures. The ponds have dried up and you can see marks where the large beasts wallowed.
Although difficult to see, there are hundreds of tiny Fiddle crabs scuttling across the salt marsh here. They were very sensitive to the vibrations of people walking on the board walk and ran in the opposite direction.
A couple of very interested box turtles reside just outside the Museum. They kept a close eye on me!
Such fantastic pictures.
