Sandon, British Columbia

This is what is left of Sandon BC, a once bustling mining town of over 5,000 residence. This was back in 1890's when silver was discovered and overnight a town was built. A flood roared through this valley in 1954 taking away most of the old derelict  buildings.

It does have the longest running power generator which was installed in 1897 and still producing electricity today.

We spent an hour talking with the owner Hal who grew up in this area. As a child he listened to the stories his grandparents shared about life in Sandon when it was a city.

The we toured the museum which houses many ........

displays and artifacts from the old city.

We left Sandon vowing to return and learn more and headed down to Kaslo another town founded on mining where we camped for the night. After breakfast we will stop at the farmers market then move on to Nelson BC.

This paddle wheeler was an essential form of transportation back in the 1800 before roads or trains arrived in the valley. It's now a national historic site in Kaslo.
