Fort Richardson

We visited Fort Richardson in Texas yesterday, before going on to Paul and Ann's place. Fort Richardson was built in 1867, the same year Canada became an independent nation.

The fort was built on the western edge of the frontier back then to control the Indians and protect the settlers moving into the new territory. It was only occupied for eleven years as the frontier kept moving west and new forts were needed.

Unfortunately the buildings were not open the day we visited but we did get a chance to peek through the windows. Here is the hospital, one of the few original buildings still standing. I was amazed to see the large windows which went right to the floor. Obviously, naturally light was very important back then and being able to see out from their beds probably helped the men recover faster.

The hospital had lovely wide veranda on four side with benches were the men able to get around could sit.

A meal for the staff. Looks like they left in a hurry.

This was the morgue. Not sure if I would want to lie in a hospital bed and look out at the morgue.

This was the remains of the jail. Those who couldn't follow orders ended up here for a while.

Tomorrow it's on to see Paul and Ann, then we need to be heading north.
