RAINY SATURDAY

Before our walk this morning Owen had a little play time in his box.

Not only can you decorate the box the way you want it but you can

also hide in it. I remember my sisters building tunnels and rooms with the pillows off the couch, mom's blankets and card tables. They would spend hours inside playing with their dolls and I suppose living some fantasy in their imagination. Kids, they can be amused with just a discarded box.

Finally it was time for a little rest on mommy's lap. Owen loves to play but he enjoys his cuddles too.

MOVING SLOWLY SOUTH

We are spending a few days at Sherri and Rob's enjoying our time together. This morning we took Owen for a walk over to the playground. Along the way we had to stop and watch some construction equipment. ......

......... and play in the leaves.

It's sunny but cool and we are slowly meandering in a southerly direction.

HIGH TECH

My brother-in-laws love techee toys especially those flying helicopters with video cameras. They even fly them inside as some models are too small and fragile to be used outside.

Now combine high tech flying machines with the production of our food and you get a bird's eye view of a food processing operation. 

Have you ever wondered how the grocery stores can sell 10 lbs of  beets for $1.99? How do farmers make a living when our food is selling so cheaply? One part of the answer is the huge mechanical operation that has streamlined the whole process and reduced human labour costs to a very small fraction of the total cost of growing, harvesting, storing and delivering fresh produce.

FALL VISITS

We worked outside yesterday morning, had an early lunch then headed out to visit friends.

First stop was this beautiful log cabin being built by Karla and Mike. It will be off grid and uses the same solar system we have. Mike is doing most of the work himself and he is doing a beautiful job.

I know they will spend a lot of time out on this deck enjoying the view.

Next stop was Pat and Jeff's place in Haliburton. They still have lots of fall colour around their lake.

Here Mary enjoys Lisa'a new baby Mason on Pat's porch. It was great to see everyone and have some time together.

Their neighbours came over for a visit and then it was time for us to head home.

BREAKFAST WITH THE BEAVERS

We've been watching the beavers from our living-room window this morning. Once we knew they were back we've been sitting here waiting and hoping we might see some activity, we weren't disappointed. Two large healthy adults are chewing on their breakfast as I type. They will eat ash, birch, maple and alder leaves but prefer poplar and aspen. For winter they will store branches on the floor of the pond by anchoring the branch securely into the mud. They are also known to eat water lilies, cattails, and grasses growing around the pond.  We are amazed at the variety and amount of wildlife we see from the comfort of our home deep in the bush near Bancroft. Sorry no picture, we are watching this activity through binoculars.

BEAVER WORK

We've had just the best fall weather in years up here. It's been perfect for working outside.

We  started this morning hauling these big maple logs out of the bush 

then  discovered the beavers have been working too. We thought they had left as we hadn't seem them swimming in our pond but obviously that didn't happen.

Sometimes their intended supper doesn't quite make it to the ground. That's when you see several trees chewed and fallen in the hopes that eventually the preferred tree will reach its destination. I was surprised at how many trees they've been eating. 

We finished the morning hauling more brush to Mary's hugo hill.

As you can see most of the leaves haven fallen but it is still a great place for working outside.

DESTINATION AIRSTREAM

This Airstream is our destination on our early morning walks. It sits beside the road and is 1.5 km from our back door, an easy reminder that it's time to turn around.

The Airstream trailer is the perfect home on wheels for touring this beautiful country. It's easy to tow, easy to park and fits into some very tight spaces. We travelled in one for two years. It gave us  comfortable accommodations and introduced us to many a friendly traveller. It just seemed for us people wanted to know about this iconic American trailer. We even had two German fellows knock on our door one night while we were camped in Joshua Tree Park. They wanted to see inside as they had heard so much about the Airstream. New ones are not cheap but you can find older ones which have been well cared for at very reasonable prices on Kijiji.

Another beautiful day ahead and once the sun is up we will walk out to the Airstream. After that we have more skids of firewood to move closer to the house and I also need to clean out my  tool shed.
